Alameda on Camera Launch Party - Feb, 22,08
Jennifer Lundeen and Nicholas
Williams, AOC 24X48 coordinators, approached me just a very
few weeks ago. For their Future Leaders Institute project,
they wanted to put together a juried exhibit of photobased
art for an April exhibit.Their timing, and the focus on
photobased art, was similar to FrankBetteCenter’s
“Alameda On Camera” challenge event and exhibit. It was just natural to
encourage Jennifer and Nicholas to run a parallel program.
As
they came into this late in the game, their first
“challenge” was rounding up “enough” participants. Our
“Alameda On Camera” event/exhibit includes 48 artists.
(hence our tag line “48 Artists, 48 hours, 48 pieces of the
map.”) Jennifer and Nicholas decided it would be more
realistic given the time constraints to try for 24 youth
participants, hence their catchy title for the youth
division “AOC 24X48”.They ended up with 16
participants, which is still quite an accomplishment given
the short time they had to get the word out. Next year, I’m
sure they’ll have several dozen applicants.
Donna Layburn, owner of the
Marketplace, is hosting the AOC 24X48 exhibit in April.
Donna was delighted to do it. She is a wonderful supporter
of the arts and especially encouraging creativity in young
people.
The artwork of our “Alameda On
Camera” artists will be showcased at FrankBetteCenter
in April. The quality of artwork last
year was super. The exhibit was an outstanding success in
the level of interest and excitement it generated in the
community. You can be sure the youth
exhibit will draw equal interest this year… and that is very
exciting to me!
I just read an email from Jennifer
saying she’s having the “a blast!” with the AOC challenge.I’m expecting to see some very
fresh and exciting artwork from the young people. An
important part of FrankBetteCenter’s
mission is to engage the community in the creative process…
so this is all perfect.
